Delhi Imposes GRAP 1 As Air Quality Slips to Poor

· India · Indian Express, News18, Hindustan Times

Authorities in New Delhi have implemented the first stage of the Graded Response Action Plan as the city's air quality deteriorated into the poor category. The city's Air Quality Index rose sharply from 179 in the moderate category on October 20 to 244 by the afternoon of October 21. Meteorological forecasts indicate that air pollution levels are likely to remain in the poor category over the coming days. Under GRAP-1, agencies are directed to step up dust mitigation measures, enforce strict compliance for construction and demolition sites, and penalize visibly polluting vehicles. Officials have also mandated regular mechanized sweeping and water sprinkling across designated areas.

Why it matters

Residents in New Delhi face immediate health risks from worsening pollution, triggering regulatory curbs on construction and transport emissions.
