Delhi Launches Rs 104-Crore Pilot Project to Test Private Pollution Control Technologies
· India · Indian Express, NDTV
The Delhi government is partnering with private firms and startups to combat air pollution by testing new technologies across 40 public sites in a Rs 104-crore pilot project. The initiative aims to reduce PM 10 and PM 2.5 levels by 20% at each designated location, spanning 1 to 1.5 acres each in areas like Khan Market, Connaught Place, and Defence Colony. Participating firms are mandated to maintain pollutant reductions over an initial one-year operational period and face a strict four-week window for device installation once sites are handed over. Spatial analysis shows that Central and South Delhi account for 48% of the selected locations, which include marketplaces, commercial hubs, transportation nodes, and hospitals. The project forms part of wider efforts coordinated through the Integrated Command and Control Centre at Shastri Park.
Why it matters
The deployment of private sector solutions directly targets localized toxic air spikes in Delhi's major commercial and tourist hubs, potentially offering scalable models for urban air quality management.
