Delhi Makes Aadhaar Mandatory For Power Subsidy Beneficiaries
· India · Indian Express, LiveMint
The Delhi government has made Aadhaar-based identification compulsory for consumers claiming electricity subsidies as beneficiary numbers reached 55 lakh. Official figures show that subsidy allocations hit Rs 4,037.63 crore by February 2026, with Rs 3,500 crore earmarked for the current financial year. Households consuming up to 200 units receive free power, while those using between 201 and 400 units receive a 50 per cent subsidy capped at Rs 800. Invoking Section 7 of the Aadhaar Act, 2016, the Delhi Lieutenant Governor issued a notification requiring individuals to submit their Aadhaar numbers through a designated web portal. Consumers without Aadhaar can apply and submit their 14-digit Enrolment ID to claim the subsidy.
Why it matters
The mandate directly affects millions of domestic electricity consumers in Delhi who rely on subsidized power bills. It aims to tighten verification and curb leakage in a scheme covering 87 per cent of the city's 73 lakh domestic power consumers.
