Delhi Ramleela to Burn 30-Foot Cockroach Effigy
· India · Times of India, LiveMint, NDTV
A 30-foot-tall cockroach effigy will be burned alongside Ravan, Kumbhkaran, and Meghnad at a Ramleela event in Pitampura, Delhi. The Shree Keshav Ram Leela Committee stated the insect represents filth and dirt, aligning with the Swachh Bharat and Swachh Delhi campaigns. Committee president and BJP MLA Ashok Goel said the decision is intended to reinforce the victory of good over evil rather than being politically motivated. The effigy will be included among the 'asuras' in Ravan's army. The move follows ongoing protests in the capital by the Cockroach Janta Party, which has been demonstrating against various government officials.
Why it matters
The inclusion of the effigy serves as a symbolic gesture for cleanliness campaigns during the festival, while also occurring against a backdrop of active political demonstrations in the capital.
