Delhi Ranks Above Bengaluru In Government Clean-Air Survey
· India · India Today, Indian Express
Delhi has ranked 21st in the Union Environment Ministry's Swachh Vayu Sarvekshan 2026, placing it ahead of Srinagar and Bengaluru, which ranked 26th and 32nd respectively. The ranking system evaluates cities based on pollution-control efforts and implementation rather than solely on air quality index measurements. Lucknow topped the list for cities with populations over 10 lakh, followed by Indore and Jabalpur. The survey considers factors such as dust control, waste management, and public awareness initiatives. Despite this ranking, Delhi continues to experience severe air quality issues during winter months.
Why it matters
The survey highlights the government's focus on administrative compliance and mitigation efforts, which can lead to higher rankings for cities despite persistent pollution levels.
