Delhi Records 1,777 H1N1 Cases as Doctors Warn of Heart Risks

Delhi has recorded 1,777 confirmed H1N1 swine flu cases this year, marking a nearly sixfold increase compared to the 229 cases reported during the same period last year. Doctors in Delhi have warned that the influenza virus extends beyond the respiratory system to affect the cardiovascular system, potentially triggering heart attacks and myocarditis. According to Dr Gautam Naik of Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, systemic inflammation from the infection places added stress on the heart and can destabilise cholesterol plaques in patients with coronary artery disease. Fever, dehydration, and low oxygen levels can further compromise weakened hearts, while cardiac symptoms are frequently mistaken for regular flu.
