Delhi Sees Six‑Fold Rise in H1N1 Cases

Delhi recorded 1,449 influenza H1N1 cases as of 12 August, more than six times the 229 cases reported in the same period last year, according to NCDC data. In 2019 Delhi had 3,637 cases and 31 deaths from H1N1. The first H1N1 case in India was reported in Hyderabad on 16 May 2009, and by 24 May 2010 India had 10,193 cases and 1,035 deaths. In June 2009 the World Health Organization declared H1N1 a global pandemic affecting over 74 countries. Swine flu is an influenza A virus with H1 and N1 proteins; its common symptoms are fever, cough, headache, muscle aches, tiredness, sweating and chills.
Why it matters
The surge places additional demand on Delhi hospitals and may prompt a review of vaccination and surveillance strategies for the city’s residents.
