Delhi to Get 836 km Water Network Upgrade With Rs 2,500 Crore ADB Loan

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced on August 25, 2026 that the city will overhaul its water distribution network using a Rs 2,500-crore loan from the Asian Development Bank, routed through the Union Finance Ministry. The plan covers 131 District Metered Areas spanning about 43.96 sq km across nine underground reservoir command areas and eight Assembly constituencies. Around 836 km of pipeline will be built or replaced, including roughly 570 km of new lines, with 2.15 lakh household connections brought under 100 per cent metering. The Delhi Jal Board has cleared Package-1 worth Rs 805 crore and Package-2 worth Rs 935 crore to improve supply in the Wazirabad Water Treatment Plant command area.
Why it matters
Residents of large north Delhi neighbourhoods including Mukherjee Nagar, Model Town, Pitampura, Shalimar Bagh and Ashok Vihar stand to receive more reliable supply, while the city targets cutting non-revenue water losses to 15 per cent from current high levels.
