Delhi University Student Union Polls Held After Satya Niketan Tragedy
· India · Indian Express, NDTV, The Hindu
Voting for the Delhi University Students’ Union polls took place in New Delhi on Friday, exactly 12 days after a fatal hostel collapse in Satya Niketan. The September 6 building collapse claimed seven lives, including five Delhi University students, casting a heavy pall over the campus elections. Student housing, hostel safety, and infrastructure dominated manifestos and campaigning near colleges like Sri Venkateswara College in South Campus. Despite the somber backdrop, old campaign patterns involving heavy security, barricades, SUVs, and money and muscle power quickly re-emerged. North Campus saw heavy police deployment and entry restrictions at the Arts Faculty as NSUI and ABVP supporters mobilized voters.
Why it matters
The DUSU elections test whether student political groups will translate grief over student housing safety into lasting administrative accountability across Delhi University.
