Delivery worker dies by suicide after allegedly being slapped for rejecting torn Rs 10 note in Delhi
· India · Indian Express, NDTV
Sameer Hussain, a 23-year-old Flipkart Minutes delivery executive, died by suicide on October 22, a day before his 24th birthday, after allegedly being slapped by Rampal Singh and his neighbour Rakesh alias Bunty for refusing a torn Rs 10 note. Hussain had recorded video clips recounting the October 4 incident at Vinod Nagar, east Delhi, in which he alleged Singh bragged about political connections and threatened to beat him up, while Bunty passed comments about his middle-class status. Police said Hussain consumed poison on October 5 and stated in the videos that if he did not get justice within 24 hours, he would drink the poison, adding 'My self-respect has been shredded to pieces.' The customer and his neighbour have been arrested in connection with the case.
Why it matters
The death underscores the vulnerability of gig-economy workers to consumer abuse and highlights gaps in grievance redressal mechanisms, with the arrested individuals being the customer and his neighbour who allegedly assaulted the delivery executive over a currency dispute.
