Democrat Jon Ossoff Retains Georgia Senate Seat
· World · BBC News, NDTV, New York Times
Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff has won re-election in Georgia, defeating Republican challenger Mike Collins. The victory strengthens Democratic influence in the swing state, which previously voted for Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential election. Ossoff campaigned on the rising cost of living and criticised his opponent's support for Trump's tariff policies. Republicans had shifted resources away from the state after polls indicated a lead for the incumbent. The result concludes one of the major contests in the US midterm elections.
Why it matters
The outcome is a significant indicator of party control in Congress and shapes the legislative environment for the remainder of Donald Trump's presidency.
