Depay Takes Pay Cut to Stay at Corinthians Until 2028

· Sports · BBC Sport, Sportstar

Memphis Depay agreed to significantly lower his salary demands to sign a two‑year deal with Corinthians, extending his stay to 2028. The Netherlands forward had been dismissed from the club after a contract renewal was withdrawn, prompting him to call the club’s behaviour unacceptable. The new agreement waives R$21 million (about £2.9 million) of the R$75 million (≈£10.6 million) owed to him, leaving R$54 million (≈£7.6 million) to be paid in four instalments beginning January 2027. Depay has scored 20 goals in 79 appearances for the club and was part of the squad that won the Copa do Brasil in 2025 and the Supercopa do Brasil this year, while Corinthians finish ninth in Série A.

Why it matters

The deal allows Corinthians to keep a proven international goal scorer without overextending their finances, potentially improving their squad quality for the upcoming season.
