The previous DMK government led by M.K. Stalin had proposed to build a multi-storeyed heritage structure in place of the King’s Barracks at Fort St. George in Chennai due to space constraints in the main fort block and the Namakkal Kavignar Maaligai. The proposal, made in 2026, did not receive approval from defence authorities who retain control over the barracks, which is on the verge of collapse. Built in 1756 and extended in 1762, the barracks housed a royal regiment since inception and served British battalions for about two centuries. The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) maintains that the entire fort premises is under its control as a protected monument, with the state and army being only occupants.
