DMK’s 1967 Rise Brings Anti‑Corruption Focus in Tamil Nadu

A 1952 Tamil film Parasakthi, written by future DMK president M. Karunanidhi, criticised Congress governance and earlier raised corruption concerns. In 1957 the Tamil Nadu Estimates Committee discussed graft in government hospitals and called for a sub‑committee. In 1962 Finance Minister M. Bhaktavatsalam introduced measures against corruption and, after becoming Chief Minister, proposed a vigilance body for local bodies. A 1966 no‑confidence motion led by DMK leader V.R. Nedunchezhian accused the ruling ministry of nepotism, intensifying anti‑corruption agitation. In 1973 Jayaprakash Narayan met Chief Minister Karunanidhi to endorse a zero‑tolerance policy, signalling continued focus on corruption.
