Doctors in Sri Lanka Remove Record 3.1kg Bladder Stone

Doctors in Trincomalee have removed a 3.1kg bladder stone from a 55-year-old patient, marking what they believe is the largest such removal on record. The patient was admitted to the hospital after suffering a stroke, during which doctors discovered urinary difficulties and found the massive stone. Measuring approximately 17 centimetres in length, the stone is comparable in size to an ostrich egg and weighs as much as a full-term baby. Dr Prahalahan Balakrishnan, who led the procedure, estimated the stone had grown inside the patient for five to 10 years. The patient remains hospitalised and is in very good health while continuing treatment for his other medical conditions.
Why it matters
This case documents an exceptionally rare medical phenomenon, surpassing the previous Guinness World Record for a bladder stone set in Brazil in 2003.
