DOJ Clarifies U.S. Agencies Were Targeted, Not Hacked, by Chinese Group

· Technology · The Hindu, Reuters

The U.S. Department of Justice has issued a correction to a previous statement, clarifying that several government agencies were targeted rather than successfully hacked by the Chinese state-sponsored group QTFY. The affected organizations include the U.S. Senate, the Federal Reserve, and NASA. Officials stated the edit ensures the press release accurately reflects an FBI affidavit, which distinguishes between attempted breaches and successful compromises. While the FBI confirmed that QTFY has targeted U.S. federal networks since at least 2018, an investigation into the attempted breach of NASA concluded it was unsuccessful. The DOJ noted that only some of the targeted agencies were actually compromised during the long-running cyber-espionage campaign.

Why it matters

The clarification narrows the scope of confirmed security breaches within critical U.S. federal institutions, distinguishing between broad surveillance attempts and successful data compromises.
