Domestic Airfares Climb as IndiGo Raises Fuel Surcharge by up to Rs 350
· Business · Times of India, The Hindu
Domestic airfares across major Indian routes have surged by up to 68% for the October-December quarter due to rising fuel costs and reduced flight frequencies. Global aviation analytics firm OAG reports that airlines have scheduled 5% fewer domestic flights compared to the same period last year. Total seat capacity has dropped by 1.2% as carriers deploy larger aircraft to manage demand while keeping overall capacity steady. In response to climbing jet fuel prices, IndiGo announced a fuel surcharge increase ranging from Rs 100 to Rs 350 for domestic flights and revised international fees effective October 6. The revised domestic surcharges now range from Rs 375 for routes under 500 kilometres up to higher tiers for longer journeys.
Why it matters
Festive season travellers face significantly higher ticket prices across domestic routes as carriers pass on increased operational costs.
