Chief Justice Surya Kant addressed the Vice Chancellors’ Conclave 2.0 at National Law University, Jodhpur on 16 August 2026 and urged law schools to move beyond merely reacting to technology and instead lead the integration of tools such as generative AI. He highlighted that technology is already reshaping legal work, from drafting contracts and due diligence to research, evidence management and dispute resolution. Kant said that future graduates will work with AI systems capable of parsing thousands of precedents in seconds, but that reliance on technology alone would leave them dependent. He stressed that academic integrity and responsible use of AI must become core components of legal curricula, and that lawyers trained to question assumptions and verify conclusions can use technology without surrendering judicial responsibility.
