DoT Directs Telecom Operators to Display Caller Names From November 1

· Technology · Hindustan Times, Indian Express

The Department of Telecommunications has directed all telecom operators to display callers' names alongside their numbers on receiver phone screens starting November 1. The calling name presentation service applies to all access service licences across wireless terrestrial networks using 4G and higher generations. International calls will display the label 'International Call', while domestic calls will show either contact-list names or names registered in operator records. Operators such as Airtel, Jio, and Vodafone Idea conducted trials for the service in wireless networks. Subscribers opting for calling line identification restriction are excluded from the service.

Why it matters

Mobile users across India will be able to identify unknown callers directly on their screens, bringing greater transparency to voice calls and helping curb spam.
