Dozens Of Coordinated Attacks Reported In Southern Thailand

· World · Al Jazeera, The Hindu

At least three people were wounded and government property was damaged during 51 coordinated arson and incendiary attacks across Thailand's southern border provinces late Saturday. The Internal Security Operations Command reported that the incidents occurred between 8pm and midnight in Narathiwat, Yala, and Pattani provinces. Firefighters extinguished blazes at a 7-Eleven store and on public roads, while railway operations were temporarily suspended in Narathiwat due to track damage. No group has claimed responsibility for the attacks, which occurred in a region where a low-level conflict has persisted since 2004. An overnight curfew was imposed in Narathiwat as authorities investigate the sites of the attacks.

Why it matters

The coordinated violence poses a significant security challenge for the Thai government in its long-standing conflict with separatist rebels in the Muslim-majority southern provinces.
