The agreement, signed in Doha, outlines sequenced steps and timelines for the peace process. Both parties committed to a standardized method for reporting ceasefire violations and establishing an implementation mechanism. A verification mission is scheduled to arrive in Minembwe, South Kivu province, on Monday. Despite these diplomatic efforts, fighting continues in the region, with the M23-aligned Congo River Alliance claiming civilian casualties from recent drone strikes.
Why it matters
The conflict has displaced approximately 5.3 million people and caused thousands of deaths since 2021, while a simultaneous Ebola outbreak has killed 2,500 people since May.
