Drone shot down by NATO over Lithuania
· World · The Hindu, globalnews.ca
NATO fighter jets shot down a drone that entered Lithuanian airspace, President Gitanas Nauseda said on Tuesday. The National Crisis Management Center reported that the drone crashed in a rural area near Lake Kaunas in the country's central region. Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia regularly report drone incursions into their territories as part of Moscow's war with Ukraine. Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kestutis Budrys thanked allied forces for protecting the region's skies. A NATO fighter previously shot down a Ukrainian drone over Estonia in May, marking the first interception of a foreign drone in Baltic airspace by NATO's air police since 2022.
Why it matters
The interception highlights escalating security risks along NATO's eastern flank as Russia's war in Ukraine continues to spill over into neighbouring Baltic airspace.
