E20 turned into 420-petrol chori from public's cars: Rahul slams government
· India · The Hindu, News18
Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi has accused the central government of misleading the public regarding the ethanol content in fuel, labelling the practice as theft. Citing tests conducted by the Karnataka government on samples from seven districts, Gandhi claimed that 11 out of 14 samples contained ethanol levels exceeding the government-mandated 20% limit. The samples, collected from various state-run and private retailers including IOCL, HPCL, BPCL, Nayara, and Shell, allegedly showed concentrations as high as 31.2%. Gandhi argued that these higher ethanol levels are unsuitable for standard vehicle engines, potentially causing reduced mileage and increased mechanical wear. He has challenged the government to disclose the actual ethanol content in petrol sold across the country and to take action against the fuel companies involved.
Why it matters
The allegations suggest that vehicle owners across India may be facing increased maintenance costs and engine damage due to fuel quality issues, while also raising questions about the transparency of the national E20 ethanol-blending program.
