EC Declares Agra Teachers' MLC Voting Void, Orders Repolling

· India · Indian Express, The Hindu

The Election Commission of India (ECI) declared voting at three polling booths in Agra's Teachers' MLC seat void and ordered repolling on Monday, October 26, 2026. The repolling will cover booth 20 in Kheragarh tehsil, booth 21 in Saiya kshetra panchayat, and booth 26 in Fatehabad kshetra panchayat, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The ECI directed the Agra Divisional Commissioner to investigate irregularities and fix responsibility of officials, with a report due by Sunday. The decision followed a recommendation from the Uttar Pradesh Chief Electoral Officer after allegations of large-scale manipulation and voter intimidation were reported by Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav.

Why it matters

The repolling directly affects the outcome of the MLC election for Agra's Teachers constituency, potentially altering the political balance in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council. The investigation may lead to disciplinary actions against officials, impacting future election conduct and voter confidence.
