European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde warned that Europe faces an unprecedented risk of being cut off from artificial intelligence technology due to its heavy reliance on imports from the United States. Speaking in Vienna, Lagarde stated that European firms currently lack sufficient domestic computing capacity, with the gap projected to grow sixfold over the next decade. She cautioned that a withdrawal of access or a change in terms by foreign partners could jeopardize every sector, from border security and tax auditing to banking and healthcare. To mitigate these risks, Lagarde urged Europe to build its own computing infrastructure and develop AI models capable of handling most tasks independently. She noted that rapid adoption of AI could boost productivity by up to 4% over the next ten years.
