Election Commission Faces Criticism Over Electoral Roll Deletions
· India · The Hindu, Times of India
The Election Commission of India, led by Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, faces criticism for the deletion of 13.37 crore names from electoral rolls during its Special Intensive Revision exercise. The process, conducted across 30 States and Union Territories, saw deletion rates reach 17% in the third phase. In Delhi, the draft roll now contains 97.54 lakh electors, a figure marginally higher than the 94.95 lakh people who voted in the February 2025 Assembly election. Critics argue that methodological flaws and ad hoc rule changes have disenfranchised genuine voters. The final rolls for the third phase of the revision are currently pending publication.
Why it matters
The large-scale deletion of names from electoral rolls threatens the principle of universal adult franchise and could impact voter participation in future elections.
