Election Commission Launches Special Drive to Restore Dropped Voters
· India · Times of India, NDTV
The Election Commission has directed state poll officials to launch a special drive to enrol left-out and new voters where the Special Intensive Revision has concluded. Booth Level Officers will cross-check current rolls with pre-SIR lists, conduct house-to-house verification, and cover 20 to 25 electors a week to finish the process within a month. The Commission also withdrew the additional SIR-related declaration attached to Form 6 and removed it from the ECINET app and portal. The move follows allegations by opposition parties that the roll revision exercise disenfranchised eligible citizens. The instructions were issued on Thursday following a virtual meeting with state chief electoral officers.
Why it matters
The verification drive directly affects eligible citizens omitted during electoral roll revisions by restoring their voting rights ahead of upcoming polls.
