Eli Lilly's Retatrutide Trial Shows Significant Weight Loss in Diabetics

Eli Lilly's experimental weight loss drug retatrutide helped obese patients with Type 2 diabetes shed up to a quarter of their body weight while maintaining blood sugar control, according to the TRIUMPH-2 clinical trial results. The study involved more than 2,000 subjects across 92 sites in eight countries, with 1,152 patients receiving doses ranging from 4mg to 12mg or a placebo for 80 weeks. Participants taking the maximum 12mg dose lost an average of 18.8% of their body weight, with 31% shedding a quarter or more of their starting weight. Furthermore, nearly three-quarters of patients achieved an HbA1c reading of 6.5% or lower, meeting the standard NHS diagnostic threshold for diabetes control. The primary side effects reported during the trial were nausea and diarrhoea, while investigators determined that seven reported deaths were unrelated to the treatment.
Why it matters
The trial data indicates that experimental triple-hormone receptor agonists could offer substantial weight reduction and metabolic benefits for patients with obesity and Type 2 diabetes.
