Elon Musk Signals End of Tesla Cybertruck Production Next Year
· Automobile · BBC News, Forbes, CNBC
Tesla will wind down production of its Cybertruck at its Texas factory next year to make room for building its self-driving Cybercab cars, Elon Musk has announced. Musk did not specify whether the company plans to halt manufacturing entirely or shift production to another facility. Lead engineer Wes Morrill wrote on X that the Cybertruck served as an incredible technology development platform that lives on through the Cybercab. Launched in 2023 following significant delays, the stainless steel vehicle drew attention for its angular design but faced disappointing sales figures and multiple recalls. Musk confirmed the vehicle's discontinuation on X in response to a user who called it Tesla's best vehicle ever made, adding that the existing Cybertruck fleet will remain on roads for a long time.
Why it matters
The decision marks the end of production for one of Tesla's most polarising vehicles as the company shifts its focus toward autonomous robotaxis. Consumers who purchased the vehicle face potential long-term support questions as the company winds down manufacturing.
