Emirates Reluctant to Move Flights to Navi Mumbai Airport

· Business · Indian Express, Hindustan Times

Dubai-based airline Emirates has stated it prefers to keep its flight operations at Mumbai airport rather than shifting flights to the new Navi Mumbai airport located 50 km away. Essa Sulaiman Ahmad, Emirates's senior vice president of commercial operations for West Asia and Indian Ocean, explained that the greenfield facility lacks fully integrated ecosystems for cargo warehousing and catering. The Adani group-controlled Mumbai International Airport Ltd had previously asked airlines to relocate a third of their international flights or suspend them starting October 25 to facilitate terminal renovation work over a four-year period. Following pushback from carriers and intervention by the Ministry of Civil Aviation, authorities decided that no international flights will be moved out of Mumbai airport until at least March-end. Emirates currently operates 167 weekly flights from nine Indian cities, including 35 from Mumbai and 28 from Delhi.

Why it matters

The standoff highlights infrastructure readiness gaps at new aviation hubs and directly impacts international carriers operating out of Mumbai.
