England Coach Thomas Tuchel Says Alex Scott Can Challenge Declan Rice for Midfield Spot
· Sports · Sportstar, straitstimes, The Straits Times
England manager Thomas Tuchel said Declan Rice faces competition for his midfield spot after Alex Scott delivered an impressive performance on his first international start in a 7-0 win over Croatia at Wembley. With Rice having withdrawn from the squad, Bournemouth midfielder Scott featured alongside Elliot Anderson, and the pair dictated play against Croatian veterans Luka Modric and Mateo Kovacic. Tuchel stated that the team needs more variety and options in midfield rather than relying on just two central players. The England coach praised Scott for playing at the highest level during the match. England, currently second in its group behind Spain, hosts the Czech Republic in a UEFA Nations League game on Tuesday.
Why it matters
The emergence of new midfield options gives England greater tactical depth and puts pressure on established starters like Declan Rice ahead of upcoming international fixtures.
