Ennore Fisherfolk Blockade Over Mass Fish Deaths in Kosasthalaiyar

Thousands of fish died in the Kosasthalaiyar River near the Ennore estuary on Sunday, prompting a demonstration by fisherfolk from eight villages. Dead species included madavai, kizhangan, oodan, karuva, kelathi, prawns and crabs, with masses floating along the riverbed and mangroves. Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board officials collected water and fish samples for analysis, while Tiruvallur MLA T. Arunkumar, the tahsildar and a Fisheries Department engineer met the protesters. Fisherfolk blamed the deaths on discharge of chemical effluents into the river and demanded a detailed report and government intervention. The incident follows long‑standing concerns over industrial waste and fly ash from nearby thermal power plants contaminating the estuary.
