Eritrea Severs Diplomatic Ties With Ethiopia Amid Escalating Border Conflict
· World · Al Jazeera, Wall Street Journal
Eritrea has severed diplomatic ties with neighboring Ethiopia following Addis Ababa's decision to expel 10 Eritrean diplomats and close its embassy in Asmara. Ethiopia declared the diplomats persona non grata, citing activities that pose a direct threat to national security and giving them 48 hours to leave the country. Eritrea's Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the expulsion as unfounded and accused Ethiopia of pursuing incessant hostility and aiming to gain access to the Red Sea. Meanwhile, intense fighting has erupted between Ethiopian federal forces and an armed opposition alliance led by the Tigray People’s Liberation Front. Explosions were heard in Addis Ababa, while clashes have also spread to the northern Afar region as regional tensions reach their highest level since the end of the 2020-2022 civil war.
Why it matters
The diplomatic rupture and intense fighting between Ethiopia and Eritrea threaten to destabilize the Horn of Africa, risking a wider regional conflict that could disrupt trade and displace populations.
