Eritrea Urges UN Intervention Amid Escalating Conflict With Ethiopia
· World · Al Jazeera, Reuters
Eritrea has formally requested that the UN Security Council implement deterrent measures against Ethiopia, citing what it describes as a declaration of war. This appeal follows Ethiopia’s own letter to the council, in which Addis Ababa accused Eritrean forces of launching an all-out invasion and advancing 60 kilometres into the Tigray region. The conflict intensified last month when an alliance of seven armed groups launched attacks against federal Ethiopian forces in an effort to overthrow Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. While Ethiopia claims Eritrea is supporting the Tigray People’s Liberation Front rebels, Eritrea denies the incursion and maintains that Ethiopia’s accusations are a pretext for aggression. The Ethiopian army recently reported reclaiming the regional capital, Mekelle, and conducting drone strikes against Eritrean troops in the area.
Why it matters
The escalating conflict between these two nations threatens to destabilise the entire Horn of Africa region, potentially triggering a wider war that could involve neighbouring states and further humanitarian crises.
