Eritrean Troops Enter Northern Ethiopian Town Amid Border Tension
· World · Reuters, Al Jazeera
Eritrean military vehicles were filmed driving through a town in northern Ethiopia near the border, witnesses told Reuters on Monday. The footage shows armed personnel carriers moving through the streets of the town, which lies close to the contentious frontier between the two countries. Ethiopian officials have not yet commented on the incursion, while Eritrea has previously maintained a military presence in the region. The incident marks another flare-up in the fragile relationship following the 2022 peace agreement that ended their two-year war.
Why it matters
The movement of Eritrean troops through northern Ethiopian territory raises concerns about renewed conflict along a sensitive border region that already displaced millions during the 2022 war.
