Etsy Bans AI-Generated Recipes and Patterns on Marketplace
· Technology · CNBC
Etsy has banned the sale of AI-generated recipes, patterns, and instructions on its online marketplace. The company announced the change as part of a broader effort to set clearer rules around artificial intelligence and address growing user confusion. According to Etsy, customer uncertainty regarding AI content has emerged as one of the top three barriers to shopping more frequently on the platform. Sellers are now prohibited from creating bot-generated listings without human involvement and must display unedited photographs of actual items. Merchants are still permitted to sell AI-generated art provided they disclose the use of AI and play a clear role in the creation process.
Why it matters
The policy directly affects independent craft sellers and digital-pattern merchants on Etsy who must now adapt their listing practices and disclose AI involvement to maintain buyer trust.
