EU Considers Sanctions on Irish Alumina Refinery Supplying Russia

Aughinish Alumina, Europe's largest alumina refinery located in the west of Ireland, has become a key supplier for Russia's aluminium industry amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Owned by Russian metals conglomerate Rusal, the plant's exports to Russia surged from 24 percent in 2021 to 68 percent in 2025. The alumina travels to smelters in Siberia, with the finished aluminium ultimately supplied to Russian defence companies manufacturing missiles, tanks, and fighter jets. While the refinery has previously avoided sanctions due to minority ownership rules tied to oligarch Oleg Deripaska, some EU member states are now pushing to include it in a new sanctions package. The exact outcome of the upcoming October negotiations remains to be seen.
