EU Urges Continued Ukraine Support Amid Trump-Zelenskyy Rift

· World · Al Jazeera, France 24

European Union leaders urged continued military and financial support for Ukraine during a Brussels summit attended by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. European Council President Antonio Costa stated there is no time to withdraw support or ease sanctions on Russia, calling instead for increased pressure. Zelenskyy thanked EU leaders, calling them "real leaders" in what appeared to be a criticism of US President Donald Trump. The Ukrainian president accused Trump of blindsiding Kyiv by announcing a deal with Russia not to target energy facilities, which Zelenskyy abandoned after alleging Russia violated the agreement. Trump has also suspended sanctions on Russian oil products and negotiated a diesel deal with Putin that Zelenskyy said would fund the war. Zelenskyy requested an additional 70 billion euros in aid to brace for expected winter attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.

Why it matters

Ukraine’s ability to withstand Russian attacks this winter depends on sustained Western support, particularly as US reliability comes into question. A reduction in American aid could shift the burden to European allies and affect battlefield outcomes.
