EU Welcomes Apple Steps to Comply With Digital Rules

· Technology · Economic Times, The Hindu

The European Commission welcomed changes announced by Apple to its app developer rules, averting the threat of new financial penalties under the bloc's Digital Markets Act. In April 2025, the commission fined Apple 500 million euros ($586 million) for preventing developers from steering customers to cheaper deals outside the App Store. Under the revised terms, developers for the iPhone and iPad in the European Union will be allowed to choose between the App Store, third-party app stores, or the web for app distribution. Apple will implement the new business terms across the bloc starting in October 2026. The commission stated it is currently not considering periodic penalty payments while it monitors the announced measures.

Why it matters

App developers operating within the European Union gain alternative distribution channels and flexibility on pricing models for iPhone and iPad apps.
