Europe's AI Firms Push Back Against US Calls for Slowdown

Europe's leading artificial intelligence startup Mistral and other regional firms have rejected calls by US developers to slow the pace of AI model development. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei had previously urged companies to decelerate AI progress and sought an antitrust waiver to coordinate safety measures globally. However, European executives argue that these safety proposals are self-serving measures designed by US incumbents to protect their market dominance. Switzerland-based privacy software provider Proton and Germany's Black Forest Labs also criticized the push, stating it enforces an artificial gap against new entrants. Europe currently produces few frontier AI developers, leaving the region heavily reliant on US technology models from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Microsoft.
