European Governments Take Down Sites as US Urges PHP Fix
· Technology · Hindustan Times, Al Jazeera
Government agencies across Europe shut down websites on Wednesday following the disclosure of two critical vulnerabilities in the PHP programming language. The PHP Foundation acknowledged the flaws as a structural failure that could allow unauthenticated attackers to execute code on affected servers. The US National Security Agency urged organizations using the software to install updates immediately or take vulnerable systems offline. The flaws were independently discovered in August by security firm Calif and OpenAI, whose AI models helped researchers identify the issues, with Google-owned Wiz later identifying additional exploitation vectors. Developers have since released updates to patch the vulnerabilities.
Why it matters
PHP powers a massive share of internet infrastructure, making unpatched servers vulnerable to severe remote code execution attacks.
