European Troops to Rehearse Ukraine Deployment for Peace Scenario
· World · BBC News, The Independent
Britain and France are leading a military exercise in neighbouring Poland to test a multinational force's ability to deploy to Ukraine if a peace deal is reached. Nearly 3,000 military personnel from 12 European nations are participating in Exercise Koalicja from 9-22 November. Western officials state that the force would not engage in offensive operations, peacekeeping, or ceasefire monitoring, nor would it operate under NATO command or on the front line. Turkey has agreed to lead the maritime mission with the eventual goal of clearing mines in the Black Sea. Russia has previously voiced opposition to foreign troops in Ukraine, with President Vladimir Putin terming them legitimate targets last year.
Why it matters
The military exercise sets a concrete precedent for long-term European security guarantees and post-conflict stabilization in Ukraine.
