EV parked charging loss explained: What continues to drain your battery

· Automobile · Engadget

An EV parked at an airport for a week can lose noticeable charge despite no driving, as the battery management system periodically checks conditions and recharges low-voltage components for locks and electronics. Tesla Model 3 and Rivian R1T use the high-voltage battery to maintain 12V systems, while connected services like app requests and climate control add significant consumption. Third-party apps that repeatedly wake the vehicle further increase drain, and cold weather can decrease range estimates even without equivalent electricity use. Model 3 owners can use the Energy app's Park tab to see precise parked-energy consumption rather than relying on fluctuating range estimates.

Why it matters

EV owners leaving vehicles unplugged for extended periods face unexpected range loss, requiring careful planning to avoid being stranded with a depleted battery despite the vehicle being stationary.
