Every corner of world but Bengal: State government's new tourism ad gets trolled
· India · Times of India, Indian Express
The West Bengal government released a new tourism brand identity video on Friday, featuring prominent global landmarks alongside the Howrah Bridge. Released by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari at a public event organised by the state tourism department, the promotional video drew immediate online criticism. Netizens and opposition leaders pointed out that the ad prominently displays the Eiffel Tower and the Egyptian Pyramids while offering little representation of Bengal beyond its initial bridge shot. Trinamool Congress MP Derek O'Brien dismissed the campaign as tacky and questioned the focus on international tourism. Social media users also criticised the generic tagline and background music, urging the state to highlight local destinations like Darjeeling, the Sundarbans, and regional cuisine instead.
Why it matters
The backlash puts pressure on the state tourism department to revise its promotional strategy and focus on local cultural and geographical assets to attract visitors.
