Every Fourth Jan Dhan Account Inoperative with 5.72 Crore Having Zero Balance

Every fourth account under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana is inoperative, while nearly 5.72 crore accounts hold a zero balance, according to an RTI reply. The Department of Financial Services reported that over 59 crore PMJDY accounts held a combined balance exceeding ₹3.15 lakh crore as of August 12, 2026. Uttar Pradesh recorded the highest number of zero-balance accounts at 95.92 lakh, followed by Bihar, West Bengal, Assam, and Maharashtra. Uttar Pradesh also led in the total number of accounts at 10.51 crore, followed by Bihar and West Bengal. The RTI response stated that the Centre does not centrally maintain gender-wise bifurcation of account balances or data on accounts blocked due to suspicious transactions.
