Ex-Rajasthan Minister Vishvendra Singh Quits Congress

· India · The Hindu, Times of India

Former Rajasthan Tourism Minister Vishvendra Singh announced his resignation from the Congress party on Friday, citing differences over party policies and hurt caused by statements from fellow leaders. A member of the erstwhile Bharatpur royal family, Mr. Singh made the announcement in a social media post two days after launching a sharp public attack on State Congress president Govind Singh Dotasra. He had recently blamed district presidents for the party's poor performance in the urban local body elections, where the BJP won six of seven mayoral polls and secured 4,179 wards compared to the Congress's 3,613 wards. Mr. Singh alleged that ticket distribution sidelined genuine workers in favour of favourites and demanded Mr. Dotasra's resignation. There was no immediate confirmation from the Congress party on whether his resignation had been formally submitted.

Why it matters

The high-profile exit deepens factional fissures within the Rajasthan Congress following recent municipal poll defeats, impacting the party's organisational stability in the state.
