Expelled NC Leader Joins BJP Ahead of Kargil Local Polls
· India · The Hindu, NDTV, Times of India
Mohammad Jaffer Akhoon, the former chairman of the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council in Kargil, joined the BJP on Saturday. Akhoon was expelled from the National Conference in July after refusing to follow a power-sharing agreement with the Congress. Simultaneously, two other prominent local figures, Raza Abbasi and Fida Hussain, joined the Congress party. These political shifts occur as parties prepare for the upcoming panchayat and municipal elections scheduled for November 21 in Ladakh. The Kargil council was dissolved on October 21 following the resignation of several key members, including Akhoon.
Why it matters
These realignments signal intense political competition in Ladakh ahead of the November 21 local body elections, which follow recent administrative changes and the creation of new districts in the region.
