Expert Flags Opportunities in Rare Earths and Technology to Boost India-Japan Trade
· Business · LiveMint, NDTV
India and Japan maintain a minuscule trade relationship that requires deeper integration in technology, rare earths, and investments to secure supply chains, according to Ashoka University's Prachi Mishra. Speaking upon the release of the India-Japan Economic Corridor report by the university's Isaac Centre for Public Policy, Mishra noted that Japan's share in India's exports and imports has dropped from over 10% in the 1980s to a current range of 1% to 2%. The report explores untapped potential across manufacturing, advanced technology, financial services, and infrastructure amid global economic fragmentation. This economic analysis follows agreements announced at the 16th India-Japan Annual Summit in July 2026, which included a 10 trillion yen investment target. Mishra emphasized that closer cooperation in semiconductors and skilled labour would help both nations navigate geopolitical uncertainties and West Asian supply chain pressures.
Why it matters
Policymakers, industrial manufacturers, and technology sector investors in both India and Japan face strategic opportunities to expand bilateral trade and secure critical mineral supply chains.
