Expert Panel Inspects 130-Year-Old Mullaperiyar Dam for Safety

A five-member independent expert panel conducted a comprehensive safety evaluation of the 130-year-old Mullaperiyar dam in Keralam on Tuesday. Led by former National Hydro Electric Power Corporation CMD Balraj Joshi, the team inspected the dam and its surrounding premises in Vallakadavu near Kumily. The assessment follows a 2022 Supreme Court order prompted by a petition from Keralam native Joe Joseph, who raised concerns regarding the structure's hydrological and seismic integrity. The panel plans to consult with officials from both Tamil Nadu and Keralam before submitting a final report to the National Dam Safety Authority within 15 days. In addition to structural stability, the team will evaluate reservoir silt accumulation and potential measures to increase water-holding capacity.
