Experts and space-law authorities are warning that an accelerating wave of lunar missions risks turning the Moon into a debris-filled dumping ground. The concerns have intensified following an August 5 incident in which an 8,800-pound SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket stage crashed near Einstein Crater, kicking up a massive dust plume. Humanity has accumulated roughly 200 tonnes of material on the lunar surface since the space age began, including Apollo descent modules, Soviet rovers, and a 2022 Chinese Long March 3C rocket stage. Astronomer Jonathan McDowell notes that lunar exploration is transitioning from an era dominated by the US and Soviet Union to one involving numerous countries and commercial firms.
